Nucor Steel Habitat Home Dedication Service Sunday

March 23, 2009

DARLINGTON, SC – March 23, 2009 – The public is invited to attend the home dedication service by Darlington County Habitat for Humanity. Sunday, March 29, at 3 p.m. at 514 S. Dargan St. in Darlington followed by open house with light refreshments.

The first-time home buyer is the family of Lavera Thomas which has been at different stages of affiliate’s building program for almost two years.

This processing time has been reduced to less than half the time now because of more people becoming involved in supporting and volunteering with the affiliate.

Nucor Steel is the first local corporation to step up and partner with the local affiliate to fund and build a Habitat home.  This has been a long time dream of Melvin Simon, former board member with Habitat and a Nucor employee.  Melvin along with others who helped build the home will be on hand at the dedication service to explain how the home was built with metal studs called “Nucon Build.” The Thomas Family will receive a dedication Bible donated by Comfort Ministries in Darlington and the keys to the house at the dedication ceremony.

Each Habitat home is sold to a family by way of a 20-year interest free mortgage and the family is also required to complete 400 hours of “sweat equity” in the Habitat program.

To donate and/or volunteer with your local affiliate with its building ministry, please visit the affiliate’s web site at http://www.darcohabitat.org or call 383-8500. Darlington County Habitat for Humanity is a tithing affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and gives to a sister Habitat affiliate in Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemi spire. Habitat for Humanity is a partnering program where hard working families partner with area businesses, individuals, churches and volunteers in building their home as well as others.

The building program is currently active in the city of Darlington with Nucor Steel Corp. funding the total cost and their employees are building. This current home was framed in less than one day using all metal called “Nucon Housing.”  The local affiliate challenges all major corporations in Darlington County to follow in the footsteps of Nucor, said Ron Skipper, executive director of the affiliate.  This would help the local affiliate tremendously in reaching its goal of becoming self sustaining in its building program, Skipper said.

Skipper also challenged churches in Darlington County to support Habitat for Humanity on a local level. The local affiliate also has a Habitat Resale Store located at 120 W. Washington St. in Hartsville. The store is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Call 383-8517 for donations or to become a volunteer in the resale store.
