Lamar High School and Mayo High School for Math, Science & Technology Listed Among "America's Best High Schools"

Two Darlington County Schools are among the U.S. News & World Report’s fourth annual ranking of "America's Best High Schools". Mayo High School for Math, Science & Technology in Darlington earned a Silver rating for the third year in a row. Lamar High School in Lamar earned their first spot on the list this year with a Bronze rating.

"We are very proud of our staff and students at Lamar High School and Mayo High School," said Dr. Rainey Knight, district Superintendent of Education. "This is further proof that our schools can compete with any high school in the nation. I look forward to seeing more of our schools on the list next year."

The 2010 U.S. News & World Report “America's Best High Schools”

methodology, developed by School Evaluation Services, a K-12 education data research business run by Standard & Poor's, is based on the key principles that a great high school must serve all its students well, not just those who are bound for college and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show that the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.

Of the 21,786 public high schools examined, 1,750 were recognized for considerably outperforming their state's standards. In that group, there were 561 schools that also were found to be doing an excellent job of preparing students for college-level coursework.
